World War 1 is often remembered as a European conflict, but history rarely tells us that 13 lakh Indian soldiers were forced to fight for the British Empire in a war that was never theirs. From the trenches of France and Belgium to the deserts of Mesopotamia and Palestine, Indian soldiers shed blood to protect an empire that ruled them as subjects, not equals. This video uncovers the forgotten history of India in World War 1, where farmers, villagers, and young men from Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Garhwal, Nepal’s Terai and other regions were recruited—sometimes willingly, often forcibly—under the British colonial system.
