The East India Company, which once ruled over vast parts of India, could have ended even before the famous 1857 Revolt. While the revolt marked a major blow, internal corruption, administrative inefficiencies, and rising Indian resistance had already weakened the company. The Charter Act of 1813 and 1833, which reduced the company's trade monopoly, signaled the beginning of its downfall. Rising discontent among Indians due to heavy taxation, land policies, and cultural insensitivity further eroded its power.
