The controversy surrounding the Gyanvapi Mosque in Varanasi, post the Ram Mandir issue, has historical roots, suggesting that the Kashi Vishwanath Temple was demolished multiple times. Scholars largely agree that it was destroyed in 1194 by Qutub-ud-din Aibak, then in 1447 by Sultan Mahmud of Jaunpur, and later renovated in 1585 under Raja Todar Mal, one of Akbar's nine gems. While there is evidence supporting Todar Mal's role in temple reconstruction, concrete proof regarding the existence of a mosque during that period is lacking. Despite claims that Akbar commissioned the mosque, historical records do not substantiate this assertion.
