What really happened when the Mughal emperor Humayun fled to Persia after losing his empire? After being defeated by Sher Shah Suri in India, Humayun was forced into exile and eventually sought refuge in the Safavid Empire under Shah Tahmasp I. However, this refuge came with political and religious conditions that could change the course of Mughal history forever. According to several historical accounts, the Safavid court pressured Humayun to adopt Shia practices before granting military support. The Mughal emperor found himself in a difficult position — accept the demands or risk losing the only chance to reclaim his throne. This episode became one of the most dramatic moments in Mughal–Safavid relations and ultimately shaped the future of the Mughal Empire.
