In the 18th and 19th centuries, the British East India Company exploited the opium trade, using it as a currency to gain significant profits, which ultimately led to the ruin of both India and China. Initially used as a cash crop, opium cultivation in India dates back to the 8th century, with Arab travelers introducing it to Western India. By the 12th century, opium was extensively grown in various parts of India, particularly in Bengal and Bihar. The Mughals initially controlled this trade, followed by the Dutch and the British East India Company. The company entered the opium business in 1728 and later monopolized it after winning the Battle of Plassey in 1757. This exploitation of opium caused devastation to Indian farmers and the common people of China, while benefiting the British immensely.
