After India gained independence in 1947, most princely states joined the Union without much resistance. However, the story of Bhopal, a city in the heart of India, was different. Even after independence, hoisting the Indian flag in Bhopal could get you shot. The last Nawab of Bhopal, Hamidullah Khan, had his own plans for the state and initially opposed joining India. He had close ties with Jinnah and was an ardent supporter of Pakistan. The Nawab even secretly transferred Bhopal’s wealth to Pakistan and tried to form his own constitution and flag, aiming to keep Bhopal as an independent state. The citizens of Bhopal, mostly Hindus, were unaware of these plans at first. But once they learned about the Nawab’s intentions, a popular movement for merging with India began under leaders like Shankar Dayal Sharma and Bhai Ratan Kumar Gupta. The movement met with violent suppression, leading to clashes, imprisonments, and even deaths. The situation escalated when, on January 14, 1949, a peaceful attempt to hoist the tricolor at Boras Ghat ended in police firing, resulting in multiple casualties. The event forced the Indian government to intervene, and under pressure from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the Nawab eventually agreed to join India, albeit with several conditions. This video uncovers the lesser-known story of how Bhopal became part of India and the challenges faced by the people during this tumultuous period. #BhopalHistory #NawabHamidullahKhan #IndiaAfterIndependence #PrincelyStates #BhopalIntegration #IndianFlag #SardarPatel #IndianHistory #BhopalRiots #BhopalMovement
