The first Muslim to capture Jerusalem was Caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab, the second caliph of the Rashidun Caliphate. In the year 637 CE, during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Heraclius, the Muslim army under the command of Abu Ubaidah ibn al-Jarrah laid siege to Jerusalem. The Christian Patriarch Sophronius agreed to surrender, but only to Caliph Umar himself. Responding to the request, Umar traveled from Medina to Jerusalem in a humble manner, wearing simple clothes and riding a camel — a moment that became symbolic of Islamic humility and justice. When Umar entered the city, he was respectful towards the Christian population and religious sites. He refused to pray inside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, fearing that Muslims in the future might convert it into a mosque. Instead, he prayed outside, where the Mosque of Umar was later built. This conquest was peaceful, and the Pact of Umar granted protection to Christians and Jews, allowing them to continue practicing their religion freely. The capture of Jerusalem by Umar was not just a military achievement but a significant spiritual and political moment in Islamic history.
