The rise of Al-Qaeda, one of the world’s most infamous terrorist organizations, has roots in the geopolitical struggles of the Cold War. During the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan (1979-1989), the United States, determined to stop Soviet expansion, funded and armed Afghan mujahideen fighters through a covert CIA operation. This support was funneled through Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, and it unintentionally laid the groundwork for the birth of Al-Qaeda. Osama bin Laden, a wealthy Saudi national, became a key figure in recruiting and training these fighters. With U.S. backing, he established a network to support the mujahideen, which later evolved into Al-Qaeda. After the Soviet withdrawal, bin Laden's focus shifted to opposing Western influence in the Middle East, particularly the presence of U.S. troops in Saudi Arabia.
