Sarmad Kashani was a mystical Sufi saint, poet, and philosopher who became one of the most controversial figures of the Mughal era. Originally of Jewish descent, he later converted to Islam and traveled to India, where he became the spiritual guide of Dara Shikoh, the eldest son of Shah Jahan. Sarmad was known for his deep spiritual wisdom, but also for his unconventional lifestyle—he chose to remain unclothed, symbolizing detachment from worldly possessions. However, his influence over Dara Shikoh and his refusal to conform to orthodox Islamic beliefs made him a threat to Aurangzeb. After defeating his brother, Aurangzeb ordered Sarmad’s execution, accusing him of heresy and blasphemy. In 1661, the great Sufi saint was publicly beheaded in Delhi’s Jama Masjid area, yet it is said that even after his execution, his severed head continued to recite verses. Was Sarmad truly a heretic, or was he a victim of religious and political rivalry?
