When we talk about the Battle of Plassey (1757), the name that instantly comes to mind is Mir Jafar — the infamous betrayer who sided with the British and helped them defeat Siraj-ud-Daulah. But what if we told you that there were two other key figures in this historic betrayal, whose roles were even more crucial but sadly forgotten by most history books? These two men, Rai Durlabh and Yar Lutuf Khan, were powerful nobles in Siraj-ud-Daulah’s court who secretly aligned themselves with the British East India Company. Their silence and inaction during the battle ensured the British victory and marked the beginning of British colonial dominance in India. While Mir Jafar was promised the throne of Bengal in exchange for his betrayal, Rai Durlabh controlled key supplies and logistics, and Yar Lutuf Khan commanded a large part of the Nawab’s forces. Both deliberately avoided actual combat during the battle, leaving Siraj-ud-Daulah isolated on the battlefield. British officer Robert Clive understood the value of their betrayal and had made secret arrangements with them even before the first shot was fired.
