Did you know that Babur and Akbar—two of the greatest emperors of the Mughal dynasty—disliked the word ‘Mughal’ and avoided identifying themselves with it? But why? The term "Mughal" comes from the Persian pronunciation of "Mongol," referring to the descendants of Genghis Khan. While Babur was a descendant of both Genghis Khan (from his mother’s side) and Timur (from his father’s side), he never liked being called a Mongol. The reason? The Mongols were infamous for their barbaric invasions and destruction across Central Asia and Persia. Babur wanted to be associated with the sophisticated Persian-Timurid culture rather than the brutal legacy of the Mongols. Similarly, Akbar distanced himself from the term “Mughal” because he aimed to build an inclusive Indian empire that embraced Hindustani culture, rather than being tied to foreign Mongol roots. His policies of Sulh-e-Kul (universal tolerance) and his vision for a syncretic Indian identity made him avoid the Mongol label.
