Two Sikh Gurus were killed by the Mughal emperors. Guru Arjan Dev, the fifth Sikh Guru, was tortured and executed by Emperor Jahangir in 1606 for refusing to convert to Islam. The ninth Sikh Guru, Guru Tegh Bahadur, was martyred in 1675 under Emperor Aurangzeb's orders for defending the religious freedom of Hindus. These acts of sacrifice strengthened the resolve of the Sikh community and shaped its martial tradition, especially under Guru Gobind Singh. The Sikh Gurus' martyrdom became a symbol of resistance against oppression.
