For the past five centuries, we've been using inaccurate maps, with Africa and Greenland appearing similar in size. This distortion originated from Gerardus Mercator's 1569 map design, intended to guide sailors but exaggerating Europe's size. While imperfect, it served its purpose. The Mercator map perpetuated Eurocentrism, corrected by the Gall-Peters map in 1972, which accurately depicts countries' relative sizes but not shapes. Despite imperfections, it challenged Eurocentric views. Understanding map distortions reminds us of the complex nature of representing a spherical Earth on a flat surface.
