The capture of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj by the Mughals remains one of the most tragic events in Maratha history. But a crucial question arises—why couldn’t the Marathas rescue him for 40 days after his capture? After being betrayed at Sangameshwar and captured by Mughal forces on 1st February 1689, Sambhaji Maharaj was taken to Aurangzeb’s camp. The Marathas, led by Santaji Ghorpade and Dhanaji Jadhav, immediately attempted to launch a rescue operation. However, there were several challenges: Despite desperate efforts, the rescue attempt failed, and on 11th March 1689, Sambhaji was brutally executed after refusing to bow before Aurangzeb. His sacrifice, however, ignited a fire in the Maratha resistance, leading to Aurangzeb’s ultimate failure in conquering the Deccan.
