Iran’s journey to becoming a Shia-dominated nation started in the 16th century when the Safavid dynasty declared Shia Islam the state religion, distinguishing itself from its Sunni neighbors, particularly the Ottoman Empire. This marked a turning point for Iran, as it became the center of Shia scholarship, religious authority, and culture.
