The Anglo-Zanzibar War of August 27, 1896, lasted a mere 38 minutes, marking it as the shortest recorded conflict in history. Sultan Khalid bin Barghash's refusal to step down following Sultan Hamad bin Thuwaini's death prompted the British Empire's intervention to protect its interests. After issuing an ultimatum to Khalid, British ships bombarded the fortified Sultan's Palace, swiftly overpowering Khalid's forces. Khalid fled to the German consulate, effectively ending the war. The British installed Sultan Hamoud bin Mohammed, aligning more closely with their interests. Casualties were limited, with approximately 500 Zanzibari casualties and only one British sailor wounded. The war underscored the British Empire's military dominance and served as a reminder of the consequences of challenging British authority during the colonial period.
