The debate around Vande Mataram has returned to the centre of India’s political discourse. Prime Minister Narendra Modi accused Congress of altering the original song under pressure from the Muslim League and Jawaharlal Nehru — but what is the real truth? In this video, we uncover the complete hidden history of Vande Mataram, from its creation in the 1870s to the controversy that shaped India’s freedom movement. The story begins in Bengal with Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, a deputy magistrate troubled by British oppression. His poem Vande Mataram first appeared in the novel Anandamath, where the first two stanzas described the land of Bengal as a nurturing mother. These two stanzas — free from religious imagery — later became India’s National Song. As the song spread across Bengal and then the whole country, it became the war-cry of the freedom struggle, especially during the Swadeshi Movement after the 1905 Partition of Bengal. Rabindranath Tagore composed its tune and popularised it further. Revolutionaries like Bhagat Singh and Ram Prasad Bismil embraced it as a symbol of resistance. But controversies also emerged. The later stanzas in Anandamath invoked Hindu goddess imagery, which some Muslim organisations found objectionable. The British exploited this to fuel communal tensions. By the 1930s, Muslim League leaders including Jinnah objected strongly to the full song. The crucial moment came in 1937, when Tagore wrote to Nehru and the Congress Working Committee — including Gandhi, Patel, Subhash Bose, Azad and others — recommending that only the first two stanzas be accepted. The committee unanimously agreed. So was Vande Mataram cut under “Jinnah’s pressure”? Or was it a carefully considered national decision endorsed by every major freedom leader? We also explain why Jawaharlal Nehru and the Constituent Assembly eventually chose Jana Gana Mana as the National Anthem, while granting Vande Mataram an equal position of honour as the National Song. Watch the full video to understand the facts, the controversies, and the untold journey of India’s most debated patriotic song. क्या जिन्ना के दबाव में बदल दिया गया वंदे मातरम? वंदे मातरम का पूरा छिपा इतिहास #vandemataram #modi #indianhistory #priyankagandhi #history Contact us at : historyconnect@newshumlog.com 🔗𝗧𝗼 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲, 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘁: For regular videos, updates & more, subscribe to our YouTube channel.
